About Mercury
The only metal that is liquid at standard conditions. Known as quicksilver for its fast-flowing liquid form. Used in thermometers, barometers, and fluorescent lamps. Highly toxic, especially as methylmercury which bioaccumulates in fish. The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland was inspired by mercury poisoning in hat makers. Mercury thermometers are being phased out globally.
