About Strontium

Named after the Scottish village of Strontian where it was discovered. Strontium-90 is a dangerous radioactive isotope from nuclear fallout. Strontium ranelate is used to treat osteoporosis. Strontium compounds produce red colors in fireworks and flares. Radioactive strontium from nuclear testing was absorbed into bones of children in the 1950s and 60s.
